Regional Air Transport Summit

Working in cooperation with the Société du Plan Nord, the Ministère is preparing for the Regional Air Transport Summit. It will bring key stakeholders together in Lévis in February 2018. The Summit is meant to improve the airport network and access to air services for every region in Québec, at the best possible price.

The event will be held under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Serge Simard, Member for Dubuc and Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, and Mr. Guy Bourgeois, Member for Abitibi-Est and Parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Plan Nord.

Main issues and challenges of regional air transport in Québec

Québec is characterized by its low population density, vast territory and harsh climate, among other things. Given the importance of economic development in regions, along with the geographic location and remoteness of certain communities, the Gouvernment du Québec is especially concerned with the following problems with regard to regional air transport:

  • the high cost of this mode of transportation;
  • the frequency of flights and quality of the service;
  • the state of airport infrastructures.

Taking part in the reflection

To prepare for the Summit, the government is planning a series of consultations, both with the industry and key stakeholders in regions across Québec. In this respect, the discussion starter document Challenges, Issues, Problems and Solutions of Regional Air Transport prepared by Ms. Isabelle Dostaler, Ph.D., Full Professor at Concordia University, presents the main issues, challenges and potential solutions. Several questions that provide food for thought are also included.

Citizens interested in contributing to the process of identifying problems and potential solutions with regard to regional air transport are invited to send their comments and suggestions by e-mail to the Summit organization by October 9, 2017.
