Locations

All public roads where a photo radar device may be used are indicated by signs with the “camera” pictograph. About 160 sites were identified for the use of photo radar devices in Québec. This number does not include school zones and certain roadwork zones.

You can also visit the Québec 511 website to know the locations where photo radar devices could be used.

This section includes maps showing the locations of photo radar devices and red light cameras. These maps are grouped together by region. Note that the photo radar devices and red light cameras used in school zones and roadwork zones are not indicated on the maps.

The list of roadwork sites targeted for photo radar operations can be consulted on the Québec 511 website.

Location selection criteria

First, the Cities and the Ministère identify sites where the use of photo radar devices or red light cameras could be appropriate. Then, an advisory committee made up of representatives of the ministère des Transports, the ministère de la Sécurité publique, the Sûreté du Québec and, when they are concerned, the city authorities (transport and police services), analyzes the locations identified based on specific criteria such as:

  • accidents due to speeding or red light violations
  • geometric characteristics of the site
  • possibility to install a device at that location
  • difficulty for the police to control traffic using conventional methods

The advisory committee makes recommendations to the responsible authorities. The sites selected are suggested to the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Public Security, who determine by ministerial order the public roads where the devices could be used.

Since June 6, 2012, photo radar devices and red light cameras can be used:

  • on any public road as determined by the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Public Security, after consulting with the municipality responsible for the maintenance of the road. When considering a location, the Ministers may take into account the accident potential of the road,
  • in school zones, as defined by regulation of the Minister of Transport,
  • in a road construction site.
